2018 part 2

a bit late in doing this but oh well

2 killer actuarial mods of life con and asset val, taught by esteemed dr yeo and a random af jade nie…didn’t really like them that much and unfortunately it fked up my results real bad. weirdly enough, i actually studied with the actuarial ppl and even though learning with them was a lot more better than i thought, the results did not speak for themselves… c and even a d fml

well there was c law too…tan peng kwee was good actually as he tried to make the class engaging for all through menti…law wasn’t my strongest suit anyway and i just got average marks, but i felt that i had failed him somewhat

legal and ethical issues in sustainability was quite interesting actually, learnt about ethics in the working world and the various case studies. our assigned case was 1mdb and it was relatively easier to do i guess cos the case was still ongoing. i made the effort to get the precious class apart marks by making sure i raised my hands at least twice during the lesson ie to get the prof to notice me. she was really knowledgeable in her field, being a corporate lawyer and all and she did share snippets of the cases she had been involved in

oddly enough, i took biology and society as a liberal arts gerpe, maybe because of my plans to study biology??? it was really refreshing to learn about alzhemers and the environment, and we had to write an essay regarding plastic waste (which i did somewhat average i feel). mcq final was not that easy either and in the end i got a big fat b for all my fking efforts to write the essay well jfhsjh

that sem was also tiring af as i did not stay in hall, cue travelling >2 hours to and fro with hb cca to contend with at the same time. i regretted not staying in hall and it could be a factor why i fked up that sem

oh and hb turned out to be a fking fraud…imagine coming in 4th out of 5 places in the sunig and i really dk why the collapse happened. were we scared/unprepared or what?? losing to nus on their final match, and it was our first match cos of rain delays and shit. i guess we overestimated sit as they rekt us badly, and even though we thrashed sp [managed to play in goal for the 2nd half cos they were really bad], we inexplicably lost to smu and we felt like absolute shit. it didn’t really impact me that much funnily cos i was alr resigned to play 2nd fiddle to the other keepers, so i really did not give a flying fk as to whether we got first or nah. it did bug me as to why we were so weak mentally, and looking at this batch of freshies where most of them will be gone soon cos of exchange/internships and stuff, i really do not know how far we can progress ha ah haiz

after finals ended i joined one of the hugE 4 coYs cos i wanted to get some experience in that field. the 1st week was a training session where we recapped our knowledge of the major accounts involved eg ar, cash etc. it involved the asking of bank reconciliations form the trainers and it was held at their harbourfront office. it was quite nice to just go there for that week and learning how to do an audit. then the schedules and assigned coys came in: i was assigned to the holding companies of ahlian beehoon and balithai. cool cool, i did not know what to expect except that the ahlian beehoon grp was involved in some shady shit with the accounts and i thought it was gonna be one fked up job. to my pleasant surprise, the main bulk of the audit was alr done and i joined a senior to just wrap up the accounts cos it was time to do the consol statements. travelling to their head office in wdlnds was troublesome at least cos one had to take a cab to the industrial estate area. food was just the usual hawker centre stuff but cos its in the middle of nowhere, it was just all those eateries. well i assisted my senior with printing the necessary stuff, checking whether the figures were above the scope and tying up loose ends such as unrecorded vendor details. it was pretty fuss free though they stayed up late on the 2nd day because the partner was coming the day after.

however when we got back to office, i was then asked to do the vouching for all the 36 subsidiaries, basically ensuring that there were absolutely no errors. on one day, i was given some ‘confidential’ info about the shareholdings of the coy and i stupidly left it on the table when i knocked off…got berated for doing this cos i almost fked shit up. about the office: hot-desking concept so u could literally sit anywhere u want, but of course i preferred to sit near the team ppl as it was easier to ask questions. it spans likely 7 floors of the building and i made it a point to explore all parts. managed to find some favourite spots and the food options were not bad despite the cbd. naturally, i couldn’t be bothered to do much work when the results were released and i made my way to the favourite hotel beside mw, having realised that no one really cared who u were and it was near the cars too. i also met my mentor, who, honestly speaking, was a really nice person. she brought me out for lunch where we got to know each other better, and incidentally she was also the direct supervisor of my next job. on 31st december i was tasked to do a stock take at the streats ST outlet and i was quite scared cos it was my first time doing sth that was quite impt lol. however, i was briefed on the things to look out for and i proceeded to choose the foodstuff that i wanted the ppl to check,. there were really quite a handful, from paste to meat to volume of vingear/oil etc i can’t remember, and i also requested to do a cash count. it turned out that i made things harder for myself cos after doing a recount, the staff members were correct all along and i felt really bad cos new year eve and all. fortunately we ended at 11.30 and i managed to enter the new year 2019 by catching the fireworks

now onto the 2nd part of the job…the 1st week, we travelled to the client’s office opposite jw marriot and after getting to know the staff, it turned out that they had not prepared the necessary documents for us yet, so we had to do things such as vouching the receipts [they were freaking heavy cos it was for all 365 days, for all outlets, stored in record boxes too…]. we also went to their corporate secretary office at the arcade, where we had to update the various notices of egm/agm etc. i think i fked up this one by not putting the documents back at the correct place, cos the person called the a1 and complained that we did not put the documents back in order…and i felt rlly bad by letting the a1 take the blame. previously i had wanted to shorten my stint such that i could go back to school on 14 jan, and my mentor was really upset and displeased cos she was also facing a manpower shortage. as a result, i was guilt-tripped to stay for the entire duration [and rightfully so, looking back it was really irresponsible for me to do that]. my 3 weeks with kat grp was mostly down on the very last week. well the a1 and the senior i was working with had alr known each other previously, and they were pretty close i guess. they made an effort to include me by introducing me to the noodle shop opposite our building, and were accommodating to my schedule when i had to go back to school to collect my hall keys. also they were crazy about bubble tea, as a result i heard about hollin and their flavoured pearls. frankly speaking, i did not do a good job in the things that i was tasked to do, maybe i wasn’t sure of what to look out for but i could have asked them, but didn’t. it got to a head when my mentor reviewed my work prior to submission to the partner, and i was scolded for not being careful enough in the analysis of whether the figures were above scope, specially when the coy was just recently subsumed under the parent grp and was considered to be dormant. apparently the partner was a nice person outside work, but was very very demanding during working hours. on my 2nd last day, we arranged a lunch with the main ppl in the company and the partner along with the 3 of us. we had it at coca, a steamboat-style restaurant cos the a1 had this birthday discount or sth. yeah the partner was really motherly but i could sense a firmness inside her that belied her work ethic. at that period, my mentor was somewhat frustrated at me for fking up a supposedly simple job, and in the end i was relegated to doing the vouching of the purchase orders from the food vendors [got vegetables, seafood, wine, beer drinks…]

the only plus point was that i used my time in the office to print out the school notes for free yaasss and to hunt for files for the upcoming semester. personally my stint ended badly cos my senior, who was a really nice person too, raged at me cos i changed things that were not supposed to be changed. having heard her talk abt her experiences with a similarly incapable staff, at that point i was fking embarrassed that i managed to make her blow up and be blacklisted forever. yeah it wasn’t a very good time for me cos of my incapabilities and failures, and i really dk whether they would take me back even if i proceeded to apply to them again….it was a good experience but it could have ended in a more pleasant way………
